WVU set to compete in Myrtle Beach Invitational, Jimmy V Classic in 2018

The WVU’s Men’s Basketball team will face the Florida Gators in the 2018 Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden, per CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

WVU was originally scheduled to play Indiana in the event but the Hoosiers have since pulled out. The game is set for early December, but no specific date or time has been released.

West Virginia’s last matchup with Florida in the 2016 BIG 12-SEC Challenge resulted in an 88-71 loss.

The Mountaineers will also compete in the inaugural Myrtle Beach Invitational per Bryan Messerly of wvusports.com. The tournament will be played at Coastal Carolina University’s HTC Center on November 15, 16, and 18.

Eight teams will be competing including Wake Forest, University of Central Florida, Valparaiso, Saint Joseph’s, Cal State Fullerton, Western Kentucky and West Virginia, while the eighth team has yet to be determined. The official bracket will be announced later this summer.

ESPN announced the arrival of the tournament on April 11th during a press conference at the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. All games will be televised on ESPN’s lineup of networks.

The idea of a tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina came after moving last season’s Puerto Rico Tip-Off to the HTC Center due to Hurricane Maria. Since then, ESPN has had an interest in adding an annual early season tournament to the location.
