According to sources close to DubVNation, West Virginia head coach Neal Brown is in the process of adding Troy defensive coordinator Vic Koenning and Minnesota offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca to his staff.
Koenning was Brown’s defensive coordinator at Troy the past four seasons and also coached with Brown at Troy in 2004. Everywhere he has gone, success has followed. He elevated Troy to a top 10 defense in 2004, had Clemson as a top 25 scoring defense and 9th in total defense in 2005 and improved Kansas State’s defense from 118th overall to 38th. He also improved Illinois 91st total defense ranking to 38th in 2009.
The 3-3-5 is on its way out of Morgantown and a more conventional defensive scheme is on its way in. Koenning runs a 4-2-5 scheme with some three down alignment packages.
As for Ciarrocca, he is one of the most underrated offensive minds in college football. He guided Western Michigan’s offense under P.J. Fleck to new heights from 2013-17.
In 2016, Western Michigan was 9th in points per game (41.6), had the 25th best rushing attack and committed the fewest turnovers on the season (8).
Ciarrocca followed Fleck to Minnesota and in two seasons he helped the Golden Gophers back to a bowl game and defeated Georgia Tech 34-10 in the Quick Lane Bowl.
Nothing is official at the moment, but it seems like we could have an announcement in the coming days.
Head coach Neal Brown will he introduced on Thursday at 11am.
