Recruiting Roundup 8.8.17

This week we double dip our recruiting coverage as we have news in regards to football and basketball.

Football

Not exactly “recruiting news”, but the Mountaineers have struck once again on the transfer market landing former Alabama linebacker VanDarius Cowan. Cowan was dismissed from the Crimson Tide in late June due to an altercation at a local bar that resulted in Cowan’s arrest. He was also dismissed from his high school team, so the Mountaineers are without a doubt taking a chance here, but they seem to have confidence in him that he will resolve the off the field issues.

Cowan is listed at 6’4″ 235 lbs which makes him the biggest linebacker on the West Virginia roster and it’s not even close, He is built differently and would more than likely play right away, if he was eligible. He will be forced to sit out the 2018 season and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

West Virginia also made the cut as expected for Maryland athlete Osita Smith. Smith released his top 5 which includes Maryland, Temple, Indiana, Rutgers and West Virginia and will make his decision on August 30th.

Basketball

As for the news on the hardwood, premier big man Oscar Tshiebwe of Kennedy Catholic in Pennsylvania listed West Virginia in his top eight schools along with Illinois, Georgetown, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Kansas, Virginia and Baylor. Tshiebwe (6’9″ 230 lbs) is widely regarded as one of the nations best rebounders, if not the best. He is extremely athletic and would be a big get for the Mountaineers, especially with junior Sagaba Konate expected to enter the NBA Draft next summer. West Virginia has been in the drivers seat for Tshiebwe for a while now, but healthy competition has come along from the “blue bloods”.

Note: Current West Virginia forward Sagaba Konate also came out of Kennedy Catholic and it is believed that the two are related, but nothing has been confirmed.
