Multiple assistants officially follow Holgorsen to Houston

Just moments ago, the University of Houston announced the addition of some assistant coaches that will be joining Dana Holgorsen’s staff. Among those that will be leaving West Virginia are Daikiel Shorts (Staff assistant), Doug Belk (Cornerbacks coach), Marquel Blackwell (Runningbacks coach), Tyron Carrier (receivers coach) and Ryan Dorchester (Director of player personnel).

All of those listed will be receiving a promotion. Shorts will now be director of player development, Belk- co-defensive coordinator/cornerbacks, Marquel Blackwell- co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks and Dorchester-assistant athletic director of football operations. Carrier will still coach receivers but will also have the title of assistant head coach.

So, what does this mean for West Virginia?

Well, it means that they will have to replace their “ace recruiter” in Doug Belk. Belk has been a huge part of the program’s success finding talent in Georgia and building a pipeline. Good thing is, new head coach Neal Brown has already emphasized that they will continue to mine for talent in the Peach State.

With Blackwell gone, this now means that senior running backs Kennedy McKoy and Martell Pettaway will have had four position coaches. They never had a coach longer than one season (Seider, Dews, Blackwell, new guy).

And maybe the biggest hit is with Ryan Dorchester. Dorchester was Holgorsen’s right-hand man with recruiting. He was very successful in helping find the hidden gems that other schools overlooked and helped fill needs each year.

For Coach Brown, this now allows him to get to work on who he wants to add to his staff, which can ultimately consist of his own guys now.
